The eight-day annual Chennai International Film Festival kicked off on Thursday in Chennai. Organised by Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation along with the support of State government, the event will showcase 150 films from 57 countries.

Speaking at the inauguration of the festival, K T Rajenthra Balaji, State Minister for information (special programme implementation) listed the various measures taken by the State government to encourage cinema through awards, and said that the Chief Minister had sanctioned Rs. 50 lakh for the film festival this year, and Rs 25 Lakhs the previous year. A variety cultural show by students of K M Conservatory School was also organised as part of the celebrations.
